EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
This year in 2022, we welcome the year of the Tiger and we are proud that this year’s AMSA Lunar New Year Dinner is associated with the Willoughby City Council’s “Chatswood Year of the Tiger Festival” – a prestigious Lunar New Year celebration featuring art, music, performance, food, and traditional cultural celebrations.
12 course dinner
Certain dishes are eaten during the Lunar New Year for their symbolic meaning. Lucky food will be served on this day, which is believed to bring good luck for the coming year.
The auspicious symbolism of these traditional Lunar New Year foods is based on their pronunciations or appearance. Not only do the dishes themselves matter, but also the preparation, and ways of serving and eating mean a lot.
“Yee Sang” (Prosperity Toss Salad)
“Yee Sang” is one of the dishes most Chinese Malaysians and Singaporeans anticipate and look forward to during the Lunar New Year. Yee Sang means increase in abundance and vigor. The tossing of the Prosperity Toss Salad is a unique experience not to be missed. “Yee sang” is the infamous communal tradition inherited by multi-generations, which brings a lot of joy to the community.
Lion Dance
A Lunar New Year celebration will not be complete without the Lion Dance. It is performed to attract prosperity and good luck for the new year. The lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. At our dinner, dinner guests will have the opportunity to give away red packets to the lions in exchange for a personal greeting.
Lucky Draw Prizes
One of the highlights of the dinner is the lucky draw prizes. Dinner attendees will have a chance to purchase some raffle tickets for a chance to enter into the lucky draw. Our strong partnership with the government and diverse range of private business sectors through corporate membership has enabled us to offer a range of lucky draw prizes. The prizes in our past events have included returned air tickets to Malaysia / Singapore, hotel stay, wines, restaurant vouchers, various retail stores and more.
